Biological Treatment for Panic
Attacks
Panic attacks are rather complicated disorders that
are best dealt with through a combination of psychological
and biological therapies, medication and prevention. Done
simultaneously, sufferers have a greater shot at
overcoming panic attacks and regaining control of their
lives.
Psychological treatments,
such as cognitive behavioral therapy and exposure therapy
deal with the underlying issues behind your triggers. In
these approaches, you are taught techniques to reorient your
brain’s responses to imagined or baseless fears. Medication
treatment on the other hand, includes a range of oral
medications which may be prescribed to control your
symptoms. Most of these prescriptions are anti-anxiety or
anti-depressants. Preventive
approaches, which may be considered biological treatments
for panic attacks themselves, is to consciously avoid the
intake of food or beverages or anything that heightens
anxiety or nervousness. Avoiding coffee and other
caffeine-rich beverages, along with alcohol can greatly
improve your mood.

There are three basic
biological treatments for panic attacks that have been found
effective for controlling symptoms and minimizing the
debilitating effects of an episode. Not surprisingly, these
treatments basically relieve your body of stress, which in
turn, promotes a relaxed mental
state.
1.
There’s the panic attack
breathing technique. Learning how to breathe
correctly is important in keeping yourself together
especially during an episode. As your anxiety level rises
and you begin experiencing the symptoms of a panic attack,
your muscles tense, your chest tightens and you begin to
take shallow breaths until you’re gasping for air. Not
getting enough air circulating through your body during an
episode worsens panic attacks as your cells are starved of
oxygen. Correct breathing means
taking deep breaths slowly, feeling your diaphragm contract
and relax with each breath. You need to pull in air into
your longs inhaling through your nose and blowing it out
slowly through your mouth. Doing this requires focus so your
mind has to zero in on the
breathing.
2. Go for regular
full-body massages. If possible, do it twice daily. At
least, have one before you go to bed. Early morning massages
relaxes your body and preps it for the day’s grind.
Nighttime massages drain the tension off of your muscles and
prepare your body for sleeping. Going to bed calm and
relaxed is important for a good night’s rest. It also
minimizes sleep panic attacks or
nightmares.

3.
Practice some relaxation
techniques. Just like you need to cool down after a thorough
workout, make sure you wind down after a long day. Tense you
muscles for a few minutes then allow it to relax slowly,
completely. Doing this consciously regularly helps to
release tension and stress from your body. Of course, a warm
soak in bath water mixed with relaxing essences such as
chamomile and lavender are also great for individual
relaxation.
Obviously, these
biological treatments for panic attacks are easy to do and
can be done at home. These treatments go a long way toward
controlling your symptoms, minimizing frequency of
occurrences and ultimately overcoming panic attacks. These
treatments however, prove ineffective for sufferers who
refuse to deal with the psychology of their
issues.
