  2. Learn to relax.  This is vital to control your panic attacks. Panic attacks are characterized by sudden, intense feelings of anxiety, which are, quite obviously, irrational. Consciously reminding yourself of the fact, especially w  hen an attack is imminent helps to relax your mind. Controlling your breathing, especially during an attack alleviates your physiological manifestations. As your heart begins to pound and your chest tightens, deliberately pause and take deep breaths from your diaphragm. Put one hand over your tummy to feel the movement of muscles there. Inhale deeply through your nose and imagine the air rushing through you and filling your lungs. Exhale through your mouth. Do this slowly and deliberately, forcing your muscles to relax. 

 

Not letting panic attacks rule your life is the first step toward controlling it. Only with an acknowledgement that it is a disorder, an irrational response, will you begin to walk the path back to mental wellness. Don’t run away from people. Confront your issues and deal with the problem head on.
