  1. Acknowledge and understand it is a legitimate health issue. If you don’t, you’re not likely to seek help. You’re not qualified to treat yourself. The longer you put off treatment, the worse you’d suffer. Just like physical diseases, panic attacks don’t get better when left untreated; they get worse. Not everybody understands a condition they can’t see. That doesn’t mean it’s not there nor does it just go away if you ignore it.

  2. Seek help. This doesn’t mean going to a therapist outright; that’s too uncomfortable for some. Seeking help begins by understanding what panic attacks are, what they do to you and what you can do to manage your condition. You may not even need to go far. National government websites for health departments almost always have sections on mental health. And as anxiety and panic attacks are common mental health issues, there’s a wealth of reliable information online.  The National Institute of Mental Health’s website is a good place to begin with.

Assess your life. If you’re suffering from panic attacks, chances are, you have or are going through some major life changes that cause you a great deal of stress. How’s your anxiety level?  If you’re in a constant state of worry to the point where you’re not eating or sleeping right, you’re a prime candidate for a breakdown.

There’s no escaping it. If you want to overcome your panic attacks and reclaim your life, you must know therapy is more important than taking a pill. Mental health professionals are trained to help people deal with these issues. True, they may not fully understand what you’re going through because your therapist may not have experienced it themselves.
