Panic Disorder
Symptoms
Being a
disorder as it is, symptoms of panic disorders are
physical manifestations of a certain condition – that
occur when your flight or fight instinct is triggered
unnecessarily, or your stress and anxiety mechanisms go on
an overdrive for no apparent
reason.
Jill is merrily chatting with her
friends from work while they were walking her to the elevators.
When the bell rings and brings the elevator down to their
floor, she steps into the open door and bids her friends
goodbye. As the door shuts, she suddenly feels her chest
tighten. She is gripped by an intense feeling of fear. Heart
pounding, she eyes the numbers and the elevators walls, eyes
flashing wildly. She braces herself against the door and
tumbles out when it opened suddenly – on the ground
floor.

Ben has been in bed for hours,
sleeping soundly. All of a sudden, he wakes up with a start,
gripping the sides of his narrow twin bed. He was breathing
hard, heart beating wildly in his chest. His pupils were
dilated and he was sweating profusely. He had no recollection
of the dream, except the sharp feeling of panic and intense
fear that he could feel with every fiber of his
being.
Symptoms to Watch Out
For
An episode of panic attack lasts,
on average, about 10 minutes. Often, you’d course through
shortness of breath, your chest tightening, almost like you’re
having a heart attack or feeling like you’re on the brink of
death. An acute feeling of terror causes you to sweat like
profusely, have chills or hot flashes. Sometimes you’d feel a
tingling sensation at the tip of your fingers and toes. In many
cases, the intense feeling of being smothered or choked can
cause you to pass out. All these can happen to anyone on any
normal day, all or a sudden or for no apparent
reason.
None of the above symptoms
however, are as telling of a disorder as that lingering feeling
of fear or anxiety, the fear of having another panic attack.
Often, this lingering and constant fear between episodes
triggers the next episode. It’s like walking with a time bomb
about to explode. A slight occurrence, a nonchalant comment, a
negative tough or a missed queue can be blown out of proportion
by an already-burdened psyche.

When you’ve suffered through one
panic attack and you have this nagging, persistent fear of
another panic attack. That fear slowly but surely
saps the life out of you. Once outgoing and very social,
you withdraw from society,
avoid the place and the people where the first episode
happened. You may also begin acting skittish around
people or places where you fear another episode might
occur. If a quick review of your
more recent past reveals this drastic change in your social
life and patterns, you have a panic
disorder.
Knowing these panic disorder
symptoms should propel you to action. As in any case involving
your mental health, the first step toward health and wellness
is to make a conscious decision to do something about the
problem.
