Treat Panic Attacks
Agoraphobia

Agoraphobia is a natural
progression of a series of panic attacks. After your first
panic attack, you are more prone to suffering subsequent
episodes. Regardless of the cause or trigger, a panic attack
affects you beyond the ten minutes it takes an episode to
play itself out. You are left with the lingering feeling
of apprehension or fear.
In many cases, the fear of
going through another episode in a social function or in
situations where you could get yourself or other people’s
lives in danger often lead to withdrawal from places or
people you think are most likely to trigger an
attack.

Because there’s no way to
predict or prevent where an episode occurs, even the most
innocent of social functions – dining with a friend at a
restaurant or grocery shopping – can be a threatening
situation to a sufferer. The more episodes you’ve suffered
through in seemingly unthreatening situations or places, the
more places or people you avoid – until you confine yourself
to staying indoors, locked in your own home, scared of
people.
A phobia is an intense
fear of something that’s virtually posing no danger at all.
The fear is both so intense and irrational that it is
disabling. This is despite the fact that the person
suffering from a phobia, including agoraphobia, knows at
some rational level, that their fear is unfounded. Thus it
becomes quite clear that the treatment of agoraphobia
entails a lot of hard
work and self-help
strategies.

for Agoraphobia
The schools or thought
surrounding the nature, origin and treatment of agoraphobia
is changing. Along with advances in the science of
behavioral psychology, treatments for agoraphobia
are evolving. Of course, a
combination of medication and therapy is still the best
approach for treating agoraphobia. Medications commonly
prescribed for controlling symptoms of panic disorders are
prescribed for patients with
agoraphobia.
As in social anxiety and
panic disorders, cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT is
found to be most effective for agoraphobia. It addresses the
irrationality of your fear by helping you adopt new ways of
thinking about the situations, persons or events that cause
you undue stress or trigger intense fear. The logic behind
this strategy is deductive: Your thoughts affect the way you
feel and your feelings affect the way you behave. Changing
thought patterns changes the way you feel toward
situations and would cause you to behave
differently.

More recent therapies for
phobias include NLP or neuro-linguistic programming, and
energy psychology. NLP works by exploring the mind and
language patterns in human perception. Treatment sessions
create a situation that is real to the mind in order to
influence behavior. Energy psychology on the other hand, can
be thought of as an emotional acupuncture – techniques and
benefits without the needles.
Obviously, panic attacks
and agoraphobia have underlying causes or triggers that run
deep into a person’s history. And perhaps the most effective
treatments are those that address both the physiological
manifestations and symptoms while helping the sufferer
deal with their issues. Only by being able to untangle
yourself from irrational thought processes will you be able
to change the negative feelings.
